After riding it with an Isetta, we tested the new BMW G310R, a motorcycle that is so long-awaited and criticized now that it is a reality, despite its playful appearance, its 'racing' lines and a lot of arguments that could end up convincing you as Access BMW that you can take with the A2 permit. Improvable things? It also has them, of course. We tell you everything here:

BMW has been very brave by lowering the piston (and the displacement) to attract clients of the A2 license in a disputed category -roadsters around 300 cc- where its more generalist rivals have light artillery in terms of the weight of their motorcycles and very heavy in terms of the quality and performance of its models in that segment of the market.Look at this BMW G310R led headlight, is it cool?  We tested the new BMW G310R, a motorcycle that is being highly criticized and of which we will tell you here all its pros (yes, yes, it does) and its cons after thoroughly testing it.

If we were already among the first to present it to you in motion here, allowing us the license to face it against the BMW Isetta of half a century ago with a single cylinder motorcycle engine and equivalent displacement, now that it is a reality we have been able to test it in real conditions: by city (which is its natural habitat), on ring roads, motorways and mountain curves.

It is true that when the Isetta was released, BMW was going through very low hours as a company and to manufacture (and improve, by the way) under license from the Italian Iso a basic and economical utility to acquire and maintain would rebel over time as a true Master play. However, many things have changed in the world and in BMW itself since the mid-twentieth century and the German company, very consolidated in terms of premium two- and four-wheel reference vehicles, seemed far from needing to enter the downsizing world. 'to square the numbers ... with the high risk of devaluing a prestigious logo that those strategies have always meant for anyone.

That said and accepted the challenge by all parties, it must be recognized that the new BMW G310R enters through the eyes. Its design looks like a real R in a small bottle; It is available in three suitable colors (Pearl White Metallic with the stickers in the official BMW colors, Cosmic Black, Stratum Blue) and due to its dimensions and height from the ground (see the technical sheet below this text), it is very manageable for those who want an urban motorcycle and mousetrap, narrow, easy to ride ... and do not have more experience and / or budget (although in this last aspect it is not that it shines precisely against the competition). The design, by the way, is BMW one hundred percent. The manufacturing, however, in order to reduce costs, is the work of the Asian group TVS, in India. And quality controls, again, are taken over in Germany by the Munich manufacturer.

If you are of medium-short stature, you will appreciate that the seat height is only 785 cm. If you are tall (I am 1.90m tall), you will be surprised that you can ride relatively comfortable on such a small frame, that you can go almost upright in the city and that you can adopt a slightly more aerodynamic position when you want to squeeze its performance.

If you are used to the quality standards of the brand, you will perceive the drop in level in components and finishes as soon as you turn the key and listen to the engine. Okay, few injection single-cylinder engines sound good on a scooter or a naked one, except that you ride it on a motorcycle of the latter type and dress it up with manifolds and exhaust outlets according to what the public more prone to the neo-retro and cafe racing. But is not the case. So it is not so much surprising that the music is not refined (it is rather ugly) as that the vibrations are excessive for this type of motorcycle. That is less common with this logo on the flanks.

Anyway, accepted the challenge, I get ready to play around the city: I go up gears, down gears, I sneak into all the holes ... and I recognize that this type of agile driving is hooked. The bad thing is that as the kilometers go by I clear up a doubt that on the first day of testing I decided to postpone solving: in effect, the change is not precise and this ends up being quite annoying, because in this class of motorcycles the grace is to play with the gears, reduce to make good use of all the torque and get the most out of its performance (in this case, its 37 HP of power).

Already on the road, the top speed is more than enough (145 km / h), but when accelerating and facing clearer sections, it is not uncommon for these inaccuracies in the gearbox to cause the motorcycle to 'spit' the gear when it seems perfectly in gear ( It happened to me more than once in fourth and fifth, when opening strong throttle to gain speed and overtake before engaging a higher ratio).

Before going back to the garage, I can't help but go on mountain roads, and I have to admit that here the set shines a lot more: the clutch is not round, but it is true that it is not very demanding if you are calm. In return, the suspension complies, the brakes (with BMW Motorrad ABS as standard) also behave well -the rear has a behavior to get used to- and having a short wheelbase and a certainly balanced chassis, you end up having fun. .

As for the most practical part of this access bike, the frame, all digital, is also basic, but you have everything you need, it is easy to read ... A pity that the gauge marks badly even with the tank overflowing. By the way, it is not acceptable that the filler cap has to be tightened with one hand so that it closes while you turn the key with the other.

However, I must admit that there are slightly more striking 'buts': the power delivery of this engine is not entirely linear, when it is just what neophytes on two wheels are looking for when jumping from a 125cc to a greater displacement or, simply, get started on gear motorcycles.

However, I think that the base is not so bad, although the adjustment of all the components has to be fine-tuned and BMW has work to do if it wants to be at the level of its rivals for a very psychological price (5,090 euros) that is not especially competitive, but that will allow you to have your first BMW, a beautiful, practical and relatively fun frame.

The best: aesthetics, lightness, size, driving position for tall people, maneuverability, A2 license, ABS as standard, LED in the rear light for position and brake.

The worst: perceived quality, clutch and gear, power delivery, vibrations, finishes, gas cap ...
This is what our colleagues from Auto Bild Germany had to say after their first contact:

"Japanese tourists unsheathe their cell phones, some retirees stop short ... 'Look!' and 'I had one' are the comments. The object of their admiration is the BMW Isetta, a classic car that was once an economic miracle ... And when it comes to parking. And the motorcycle that rolls next to it ? They do not pay much attention to her, although it is the real surprise.

The BMW G310R is the youngest, smallest and cheapest motorcycle from BMW. With a price that starts in Spain at 4,950 euros, it aims to attract new customers who want to access the brand for the first time and move at the same time with agility through urban traffic or park anywhere. Something similar to what the Isetta was in the 60s.

The question is: Can only 313cc be worthy of a premium brand? Well, the truth is that the sensation it transmits when sitting down and starting is similar to that of the largest R models. You feel comfortable and safe, your feet and hands fit perfectly in it ... As long as you are not taller than 1, 90, of course.

And, of course, this is far from being a moped. Having a small displacement does not automatically mean being a small motorcycle. Only my passenger will be short of space on the thin and small rear saddle on the tail. But this bike does not pretend to be a great traveler, but an agile vehicle for the city.

It is made in India by a partner under BMW prescriptions, which will soon launch its own bike on the same technology. That doesn't have to be a disadvantage; in fact, the Isetta was also produced under license. The original came from Italy, from Iso, and BMW manufactured its model from 1955 on the basis of the R 25.

The engine gave at the beginning 12 CV, later, with 300 cc, it went up to 13. 'Save by driving an Isetta, said the advertising of the time. Stopping at a traffic light causes quite a stir: the rest of the cars are approaching, they all want to see the classic up close, a car capable of reaching 80 km / h on the level as long as it has enough distance.

The new BMW G310R far exceeds that. With its tight 160 kilos, it pulls hard, and leaves the cars behind in the first few meters, even though its engine 'only' yields 34 hp. Why so few, when competitors like the KTM Duke 390 or the Yamaha MT-03 reach 42?

"You have to take the whole into account," says BMW Product Manager Jörg Schüller. "Our goal was to create a lightweight vehicle, not a sports bike." The brand does not give figures for the sprint from 0 to 100 km / h. Are the Munich people ashamed of their little girl?

You have to understand its concept. Reacts with agility in turns, the set maintains the straight line with poise. Brakes with ABS brake - as we are accustomed to BMW - exceptionally. The firm suspension is a great ally for day to day. Even first timers will be amazed by this BMW at how easy it is to ride a motorcycle. And it must be said that the sound that comes out of its exhaust is very successful.

Let's go with the little flaws. The finishes match this price level, but the slim figures on the lap counter are difficult to read. And it is not trivial: from 5,000 revolutions it begins to vibrate up to the handlebar, even when it has a compensating shaft. And the gear indicator does not help much: in 'N', sometimes the second is still inserted. And so the engine easily chokes. At BMW they must give their Indian partners a touch in this regard ...
Great personality

The Isetta also had its flaws. But the truth is that in the model that they have left us for the photo session, its owner has restored almost everything: the heating pipes, the windows and even the engine. A 1960 copy in perfect condition. Until 1962, 161,000 units were produced, and it was a good boost for the brand's survival. Today, BMW is re-introducing a city access model. Will Japanese tourists photograph this motorcycle too in 60 years?
Synthesis synthesis of this first test of the BMW G310R

The small BMW contains enough talent of the brand to stand out in the access segment: good chassis, balanced concept, excellent brakes ... and in Spain it can be driven with the A2 license. But the Germans must improve the change, so that the price can be considered really competitive. "
