Chevrolet Silverado EV: the Answer to the Ford F-150 Lightning

The new Chevrolet Silverado EV has become the answer to the Ford F-150 Lightning. It debuts with 517 CV of power and up to 644 km of autonomy.

After the emergence of the Ford F-150 Lightning in May of last year, General Motors has been at a disadvantage by not being able to offer a rival at the height of its main competitor. The truck segment is also electrified and, with it, the large American manufacturers. The company has just revealed the new Chevrolet Silverado EV, the answer to the electric F-150.



The new electric Silverado has been built from the ground up as a pickup with a "boundary-breaking combination of capability, performance and versatility." In addition, its exterior design is nothing like that of the 2022 Silverado, as are its features, capabilities and performance. At the design level, we can see an aerodynamic front that has been "sculpted to direct air efficiently along the side of the body, significantly reducing drag and turbulence." Available only in Crew Cab configuration, the Silverado EV features a short overhang and a fully shrouded grille that is part of the front trunk.

The front trunk is a lockable, weather-resistant compartment that allows owners to store items. Chevrolet expects to offer a wide variety of trunk accessories, such as dividers and cargo nets. On the sides, meanwhile, we have pronounced wheel arches, 24-inch wheels and plastic cladding.

At the rear is a cargo bed measuring 1,803mm with a central Multi-Flex door reminiscent of the one used by the Chevrolet Avalanche. With the door closed, the electric Silverado will be able to transport objects that are more than 2,743 mm long, expanding the space by up to 3,302 mm when the tailgate is lowered.

Already inside the Chevrolet Silverado EV we find an 11-inch digital instrument panel and an infotainment system with a 17-inch screen. To this must be added a fixed panoramic roof, a Head-Up Display and two-tone leather seats with red accents.

We can also see a flat-bottom steering wheel, column-mounted gear lever and heated rear seats that, according to Chevrolet, allow people over 1.83 m tall "to be comfortable no matter where they sit" . In addition, the modular center console offers a 32-litre storage compartment.

And in the mechanical section, the Silverado EV is available with a power of 517 hp and a maximum torque of 834 Nm. This allows the pick-up to travel up to 644 kilometers on a single charge, while offering a towing capacity of up to 3,600 kilos. Chevrolet has announced that this capacity will increase to 9,000 kilos with a specific package.

The company has also announced an even more powerful second version, called the Silverado EV RST First Edition. This variant will have an all-wheel drive system, and two engines that will develop a maximum power of 673 hp and a torque of more than 1,056 Nm.

These figures are quite impressive. Chevrolet also said that there will be a mode called Wide Open Watts that will allow the electric pick-up to go from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.6 seconds, a range of 644 kilometers and a price of 105,000 dollars (93,000 euros). In addition, it supports fast charging of 350 kW that allows you to add 161 km of autonomy in just ten minutes.

On the other hand, the Silverado EV will offer vehicle-to-vehicle charging technology, just like the Ford F-150 Lightning. To this must be added the PowerBase charging system that offers up to ten outlets for power tools and other components. It provides up to 10.2 kW of power and can even power a house with the right equipment.

This RST version is equipped with a four-wheel steering system and air suspension that allows the body to be raised or lowered by up to 50 mm. Buyers will also get a trailer-compatible Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system.

In terms of prices and trim levels, the Chevrolet Silverado EV WT will be the access option to the range with a figure of 39,900 dollars (35,300 euros). It will be followed by the Trail Boss version of which no further details have emerged.
